The salt pans can only be worked between the end of the harvest and the first autumn rain. That gave us nine days.

No steel

Salt eats steel. Every joint in the pavilion is timber on timber, held with oak pegs that the carpenters cut on site from a single beam.

The last day

We fixed the final roof board at six in the evening, as the first clouds came in from the sea. It rained for a week. The pavilion has been dry underneath ever since.
