Board-marked concrete is usually poured against pine planks that end up in a skip. At Casa Lario we used the larch that would later clad the house instead.

Why larch

Larch is resinous and slightly uneven. Pressed against wet concrete, it leaves a deeper, more irregular grain than pine, and each board leaves a slightly different print.

What it cost

The boards had to be planed on one side only, used once and then cleaned and dried for six weeks before going on the facade. It added a month to the programme. Standing in the living room, nobody has asked whether it was worth it.
